Organic Textile Processing

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certification

The worldwide leading standard for organic fiber processing, including environmental, toxicological, and social criteria.

What is GOTS Certification?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, backed by independent certification across the entire textile supply chain.

GOTS covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibres (such as organic cotton, wool, or silk). It uniquely combines rigorous environmental criteria with strict social labor standards.

Core Environmental & Social Criteria Under GOTS

  • Organic Fiber Purity: 'Organic' label requires minimum 95% organic fibers; 'Made with Organic' requires minimum 70%.
  • Prohibited Toxic Inputs: Strict prohibition of toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, nano-particles, and GMOs.
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETP): Mandatory functional effluent treatment plant for all wet-processing and dyeing units.
  • Transaction Certificates (TCs): Mandatory shipment-by-shipment volume tracking preventing counterfeit organic claims.
  • Social Criteria Aligned with ILO: Banning child labor, enforcing minimum living wages, reasonable working hours, and workplace safety.

Commercial Advantages for Textile Exporters

  • Premier Access to Western Fashion Brands: Mandatory qualification for H&M, Inditex (Zara), C&A, Patagonia, and Target.
  • Premium Profit Margins: GOTS certified organic apparel, babywear, and home textiles realize premium retail margins.
  • Single Global Standard: Replaces multiple fragmented national standards with one universally recognized certification.
